Legionnaires,
As we enter the final portion of this year’s election cycle, please remember The American Legion is NON-POLITICAL! Do not wear anything identifying your affiliation with The American Legion Family if you campaign for a candidate.
The American Legion is a federally chartered entity. Title 36, section 21706 of the United States Code requires The American Legion, “be nonpolitical and may not promote the candidacy of an individual seeking public office.” Article II, Section 2 of the National Constitution of The American Legion requires, “The American Legion shall be absolutely nonpolitical and shall not be used for the dissemination of partisan
principles nor for the promotion of the candidacy of any person seeking public office or preferment.” The Colorado Department’s own constitution requires of both the Department and its members, “NON-POLITICAL. The American Legion, Department of Colorado, is non-political and shall not be used for the dissemination of partisan principles nor the promotion of the candidacy of any person seeking public office or preferment.”
We appreciate anyone who advocates for veterans and the Four Pillars of The American Legion, i.e., Veterans Affairs and Rehabilitation, National Security, Americanism, and Children & Youth. While our veterans can share their support for a candidate, they cannot do so while wearing The American Legion emblem or while identifying as a member of The American Legion Family. To do so may indicate The American Legion’s support for a particular candidate, something we are prohibited by federal law from doing.
Respectfully,
Be A Light of Hope for All Veterans

Department Commander, TAL-CO
